Concurrent Session 1: Helping Children Navigate Anxiety and Depression During the Pandemic (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 108

Unprecedented global illness, economic uncertainty, and political unrest have had extraordinary effects on the mental and physical health of children and adolescents. In a relatively short time, we have collected data about the pandemic’s effect on mental health, physical activity, and academic progress. Adverse childhood events are known to have long-term health consequences, but there are ways to nurture resilience during challenging times.

Concurrent Session 2: Assessing Our Implicit Biases and How They Manifest (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 109

In this presentation, we will continue to explore implicit biases in a traditional healthcare setting. Dr. Zimmer will outline how to create awareness, mitigate the impact of biases, and put processes in place to safeguard against them.

Concurrent Session 3: Addressing Food Access and Insecurity (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 110

Clancy Cash Harrison, the founder of the Food Dignity®Project and registered dietitian, dramatically and permanently shifts the conversation around food access, health, and social responsibility. Audience members awaken (or in many cases reinvigorate) their sense of professional responsibility to improve food equity for everyone. This interactive session integrates thought-provoking storytelling with statistics so participants are inspired to initiate effective collaboration, inspire Food Dignity®, improve health outcomes, and bust through the stigma associated with access to healthy food.

Concurrent Session 4: Phytochemicals That Enhance Healthspan: The Therapeutic Uses of Isothiocyanates Found in Crucifers and Moringa oleifera (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 111

The isothiocyanate sulforaphane from broccoli is the subject of intense interest as a driver of healthspan, as an anti-inflammatory, in mitochondrial and immune support, and as an inducer of manifold Nrf2-linked detoxification and antioxidant pathways, to name but a few of its roles. All cruciferous vegetables contain similar compounds, as do the protein-and vitamin-rich leaves of Moringa oleifera, the tropical drumstick tree. Clinical findings over the last quarter-decade with isothiocyanates and their glucosinolate precursors from both broccoli and moringa will be discussed.

Concurrent Session 5: Protecting Our Protectors: Enhancing Immune Resilience and Mitigating Occupational Risks for First Responders (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 112

Now more than ever, we rely on our first responders to keep us safe. Unfortunately, as a result of multiple unique occupational exposures, our front-line workers have markedly increased incidence of circadian rhythm disruption, inflammation, metabolic and cardiovascular disease, and behavioral health burdens, including suicide, cancer, and injuries. This talk will explore the research and pathophysiology of the health burden experienced by first responders and detail a comprehensive functional medicine program for helping prevent and reverse the illness burden experienced by our local and national heroes.

Concurrent Session 6: Improving Immune Resilience in Veterans (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 113

The presenters will identify the occupational exposures and the health impacts of the military operational environment on veterans. We will highlight the concept of the "Operator Syndrome" and how that adversely impacts immune health. We will discuss strategies for using a functional medicine approach to optimize immune resiliency and enhance force health protection in military service members.

Concurrent Session 7: Optimizing Surgical Outcomes (CME)

Jun 3, 2021 2:30pm ‐ Jun 3, 2021 3:45pm

Identification: 114

In this talk, Dr. Kerina will outline how he improves surgical outcomes using a functional medicine approach.
