This keynote address will provide an inspiring message about how this time of unprecedented challenge provides opportunities for improving individual and collective health and well-being through societal healing and transformation.

Bias is as natural as breathing to human being – the mind makes associations. This is how we navigate the world. In the healthcare setting, implicit bias can shape the way medical providers interact with patients. Everyone is susceptible to implicit bias, even clinicians, and these unconscious preconceptions can impact patient-provider communication. In this talk, Dr. Zimmer will discuss the importance of recognizing implicit biases in the healthcare setting.

This talk will focus on how polyvagal theory provides a neural foundation for a brain-body medicine that would lead to insights into the treatment of trauma-related mental and physical health challenges. The theory describes how, via evolution, a connection emerged in the brain between the nerves that control the heart and the face. This face-heart connection provided the structures for the “social engagement system” that links sociality with autonomic regulation and explains the important mediating role of physiological state in facilitating either connectedness and intimacy or defense such as fight/flight, hypervigilance, dissociation, collapse, shutdown, and even syncope.

Every population is made up of individuals who have a spectrum of sensitivity to environmental risk factors for chronic illness. This talk will describe the links between dozens of environmental chemicals that can be measured in the blood and the metabolic changes they produce that can be used for diagnosis, prognosis, and management. Results from studies in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and adults with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) will be discussed.
